The Little Gardeners - Original painting

This one is all about the boys. Gainsborough's Blue Boy Jonathon Buttall is appropriated in the centre.  He was an ordinary middle class boy (son of an ironmonger) but painted in a highly romantic and heroic pose. The little black-velvet-clad porcelain doll is from Germany and the little gardeners could be from anywhere. They wouldn't stay clean fro long. The flowers are symbolic; daisies for innocence, zinnias for endurance, lasting friendship and remembrance.
